The Wedding

01 / 18

The Wedding was a conceptual fashion show presented as a wedding ceremony, organised by Fashion Community Helsinki to invite audiences to reflect on the role of festive attire and fashion in society.

The theme of the show drew on the wedding as a starting point for exploring customs, expectations, and ideas of beauty surrounding one of life’s most ritualised moments. By staging fashion within the form of a ceremony, the project challenged prevailing ideals and examined how clothing carries tradition, identity, and personal expression in equal measure.

Developed in collaboration with fashion designers Sini Saavala and Ellen Rajala together with jewellery designer and goldsmith Matilda Mannström, the show brought together their individual practices around shared themes of sustainable fashion and norm-breaking interpretations of festive wear. Each designer contributed their own perspective on what it means to dress for a milestone moment, moving between artistic, experimental fashion and pieces that highlight the individuality of both maker and wearer.

Set at Nordic Culture Point’s venue at Suomenlinna in Helsinki, the show created a shared and immersive experience, bringing the audience directly into the ceremony. The event opened with a speech by Autuas Ukkonen, and theremin artist Susanna Viljanmaa provided the live soundtrack as the ceremony unfolded, blurring the line between performance and exhibition.
